THE PASTOR'S DESK
The sanctuary at Byron U.M.C. is holiday dressed, the musically talented praise team is leading us in favorite Christmas anthems, and the Advent season has begun. We would love for you to join us for this season of living hope, as we reflect and remember the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in our current sermon series.
For December, my sermons will look more closely at the topic of Advent. Each week the Advent wreath will have another candle lit, and we will look at the symbolism of what the topics surrounding Advent truly mean. I will help you to sincerely remember what loving Jesus means, not only in our lives today, but in our future too. I hope you will join us each Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. as we reflect on the significant impact accepting Christ as our Savior brings to our lives.
Also, as you peruse our website you will find many holiday activities to partake in. Some of them include our Youth Christmas Tree sale. Hours are Monday through Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday 9 to 6 p.m. Proceeds will benefit our youth programs as well as missions and other events. Trees are priced as low as $25, so stop by and choose one for your family soon.
Additionally, on Thursday evening December 13, at 7 p.m., we will be hosting a Candlelight Christmas Tea in Fellowship Hall. This is a beautiful sight to behold, as each table is creatively decorated by the individual table hostesses, and dessert served with tea or coffee. You may host a table or be a guest at a table, contact the church for details. If you like to go Christmas Caroling, we will be doing so on Saturday evening December 15. We will depart from the church at 4:45 p.m. and visit our elderly and shut-ins. After caroling we will return to the church and have a potluck supper. So plan on bringing a dish to pass and enjoying a time of fellowship with one another after caroling. Looking into January a bit, Winter Jam will be occurring on January 18. I will have further details on that topic in the coming weeks.
Our regular church opportunities continue as well. Worship time is 9:30 a.m. followed by a coffee, cookie, and visiting period. Kids’ Time (preschool to 6th grade) convenes in the lower level of the church after the start of the worship service. Students engage in a children’s ministry which includes bible lessons and crafts. Adult Sunday School class meets at 11:00 a.m. Our BRAVE Youth Group (6th to 12th grade) meets Sunday evenings 6 to 8 p.m. We are studying contemporary Christian music, and where the messages reflected in the songs come from in the bible. Also, Chair and Holy Yoga will continue to be available on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Chair Yoga is from 5:15 to 5:45 p.m. and Holy Yoga is from 6 to 7 p.m. These classes are offered FREE to anyone (goodwill offerings are accepted.) Take note that the December schedule is tweaked a bit due to the holidays. There will be no yoga on December 3, or December 24 through January 4. Classes will resume as normal on Monday, January 7. Cancellation of class during the winter months occurs if Byron Center Public Schools are closed due to a snow day. More details on our website.
I hope you will check out the other opportunities that we have listed on our website also. There are a variety of bible study groups that meet day or evening, craft nights and movie nights too. Also, our Dinner for Eight groups have begun, and are a fun way to get together and meet new people. And if you prefer a more traditional type of worship, the second Tuesday of each month we offer a Foundations of Our Faith program. The next meeting is December 11 at 11:00 a.m.
